Jakarta, TOPNews Indonesia –
One in three survivors Covid-19 diagnosed with a problem mentally and neurological at six months after infection.
This was found in the largest study of the impact of Covid-19 on mental health and the brain.
Research published in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry found that Covid-19 patients were significantly more likely to develop neurological and mental problems, than survivors of other respiratory diseases.
Launch AFP, the study studied the health records of more than 230 thousand Covid-19 survivors. As a result, they found that 34 percent were diagnosed with neurological and psychiatric conditions within six months of infection.
Psychiatric conditions that lurked the most were anxiety disorders (17 percent) and mood disorders (14 percent).
Meanwhile, the overall incidence of neurological disorders such as bleeding in the brain (0.6 percent), stroke (2.1 percent), and dementia (0.7 percent) was lower than that of psychiatric disorders.
However, overall, the risk of neurological disorders was generally found to be more likely in Covid-19 survivors with severe symptoms. As many as 46 percent of Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms were diagnosed with neurological problems at a later date.
Not only that, the researchers also compared the risk of neurological and psychiatric disorders in survivors of Covid-19, influenza and other respiratory infections.
The researchers examined data from more than 100,000 patients diagnosed with influenza and 236,000 patients with other respiratory infections.
They found that the overall risk of neurological and mental disorders was 44 percent more likely to suffer from Covid-19 survivors than the flu and other respiratory infections.
“Many of these conditions are chronic,” said the study’s lead author from the University of Oxford, Paul Harrison.
University College London scientist Jonathan Rogers, who was not involved in the research, commented that further research is needed to confirm this.
“Many of the disorders identified in this study tend to be chronic and recurrent. That means we have to anticipate that the effects of Covid019 can be with us for many years,” said Rogers.
