Jakarta, TOPNews Indonesia —
In the midst of soaring cases of corona virus infection again (Covid-19), recommendation to wear face mask duplicates are resubmitted. However, are double masks effective at preventing exposure? virus?
The recommendation was conveyed by the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) through an Instagram upload. “Start using two masks for more optimal prevention of Covid-19,” reads the caption in the image uploaded on Thursday (17/6).
RSUI advised the public to use double masks consisting of medical masks and cloth masks. In addition to the use of double masks, to increase the prevention of exposure to SARS-CoV-2, it is also recommended that you tie a mask rope knot.
“The results of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study on the effectiveness of masks show that the use of two layers [rangkap] masks or concluding mask straps can filter up to 90 percent of the corona virus that causes Covid-19,” wrote RSUI.
A CDC study conducted in early 2021 found that the use of a double or double mask can block 92.5 percent of potentially infectious particles.
However, the CDC does not advise the public to combine two medical masks at once. The CDC also does not recommend dual use with a KN95 mask.
“Disposable masks weren’t designed that way. Wearing more than one mask [medis] will not increase effectiveness,” the CDC wrote.
The same was found in a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. A double mask not only adds a layer of protective fabric, but also eliminates any open gaps or areas where the mask doesn’t fit.
However, the use of double masks must be done properly. For example, not in a loose state.
“We’ve found that wearing two loose-fitting masks won’t give you adequate protection,” the researchers wrote.
Here’s how to check if the mask used is right.
1. Place your hands on the cheek area that is close to the ear or which is not covered by the mask.
2. Inhale and exhale. Make sure no air is flowing from the area.
3. Check the eyes too. Make sure there is no airflow in the eye area.
