Jakarta, TOPNews Indonesia —
Zara received strong criticism due to the comments of one of the designers related Palestine. Now, the Spanish fashion giant is even threatened with a boycott, as netizens have called.
Launch TOPNews, this event started with one of Zara’s designers, Vanessa Perilman, who sent an inflammatory message to Palestinian model, Qaher Harhash on Instagram.
At first, Harhash only uploaded content containing his support for Palestine on his personal Instagram account. Perilman came to respond to the upload through a message that was deemed blasphemy against Palestine.
“Perhaps, if your people [Palestina] educated, then they will not blow up the hospitals and schools that Israel helps finance in Gaza,” Perilman wrote to Harhash. “The Israelis don’t teach children to hate or throw stones at soldiers like the Palestinians do.”
Perilman’s comments come less than a month after the bloody 11-day conflict ended between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The Israel Defense Forces carried out aerial bombings that devastated Gaza. The air bombs killed more than 200 people, including 65 children.
Meanwhile Hamas fired thousands of rockets at Israel. At least 12 people in Israel were reported killed.
“I will never stop defending Israel,” Perilman continued.
The conversation spread through a screenshot. However, now the screenshot has disappeared.
Harhash then uploaded the screenshot. The action angered Perilman who questioned why Harhash had uploaded the screenshot. Perilman even admitted that there were threats aimed at his children.
“I’m sorry if this debate ended up being something it shouldn’t have. But now it’s getting out of hand. I’ve actually received death threats against my children,” Perilman said.
Perilman regretted the seditious message he wrote to Harhash. “I hope you [Harhash] can forgive me,” he said.
Currently, Perilman himself has deactivated his Instagram account.
The post sparked a netizen response. Netizens ask Zara to take disciplinary action against Perilman. Netizens have even threatened to boycott Zara.
Responding to this, Zara gave her comments in a caption. Zara says it will never tolerate any act of discrimination.
“We condemn comments that do not reflect our core values of respect for one another. We regret the chaos that has arisen. As a diverse and multicultural company, we are committed to ensuring a fair and inclusive environment as part of our corporate values, ‘ wrote Zara.
