Happy National Children’s Day!
It’s time to increase alias binding bonding Among parent and child. One of the activities you can do today is read stories to children.
According to child and adolescent psychologist Vera Itabiliana Hadiwidjojo, reading story books with children has many benefits, especially if done early. You can read stories from the time the child is still in the womb.
“If you start bonding when you’re in your teens, it’s a bit difficult. So you get used to it from an early age, the child is comfortable spending time with us regularly. Keep on paying it in installments, when he starts to meet friends, goes to play, he runs everywhere, back to his mother,” Vera said in a virtual meeting with Mama’s Choice, Thursday (22/7).
Here are some tips for reading stories to children to strengthen the bond:
Vera said that there are two conditions that need to be met to strengthen the bond with children, namely regular joint activities and physical touch. This activity is not just feeding, bathing, or accompanying studying, but a fun activity accompanied by laughter and relaxation.
Reading stories is one of them. Read stories to children regularly, for example, before bed.
2. Physical touch
Physical touch plays a very important role in creating bonding as well as providing a sense of calm for both mother and child. Reading stories, continued Vera, there can be no physical distance so that a mother or father can caress, pat the back, touch the child’s hand.
“Through touch, this will stimulate the hormone oxytocin not only in the child but also in the mother,” said Vera.
3. Starting from the period of pregnancy
The most common question asked is when do you start reading stories to your child or getting your child used to reading?
Vera said parents can start as early as possible even since the child is in the womb. The child is not yet able to respond, but actually at a certain gestational age, the child can hear your voice.
4. Book selection
For the choice of books, if the child is still in the womb, the type of book can focus more on the mother’s choice. Mothers need to get used to reading before passing this habit on to their children. Free reading as per your interest.
Then if you want to read stories to children, mothers can voice what they read. We recommend choosing a story book that is simple and not too long.
“Once the book is born, it’s definitely a colored book, right, we will show the book to the children. The story is simple, the animal characters may be funny, the plot is simple, the pictures are big, the writing is little,” said Vera.
5. No need to feel inferior
Mothers don’t have to be great storytellers to be able to read stories to their children. The best thing is to read the story with the right intonation and clear articulation. But actually what is needed is the presence of the mother or father who is fully close to the child.
“You don’t have to be afraid, you don’t have to be confident because you can’t play intonation. You don’t have to be afraid because the child will miss your mother’s voice and scent,” continued Vera.
Those are tips for reading stories to children that parents can do at home.
