Since 2018, actress Sandra Oh has been starring in the suspenseful story series, “Killing Eve.” However, this year was a little different for Sandra Oh, where she starred in a comedy-drama series for the Netflix streaming service, “The Chair”.
In the film “The Chair”, Sandra Oh plays Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, who serves as the new head of the English department at a prestigious university called Pembroke.
She was the first woman to ever chair the department and was one of only a handful of employees of color at the university.
When one of her colleagues misbehaves in class, Professor Kim tries to solve the problem while facing a culture of patriarchy, sexism, age discrimination, plus being a single mother who feels trapped between two cultures.
“The comedy theme caught my attention, even though Professor Kim has to go through various unpleasant problems every day,” Sandra Oh said in an interview with the Associated Press recently.
The position bequeathed to Professor Kim actually fell at an inconvenient time. The number of new students enrolling under the English major is declining and most of the teachers are white citizens who are old and do as they please.
The “The Chair” series also stars Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Nana Mensah, and Bob Balaban, all of whom have college experience. However, Sandra Oh never.
Sandra Oh, who is Korean, admitted that it was not the academic background in this film that caught her attention, but the Korean name attached to her character that attracted her.
“Slowly in the course of my career, I can note that there has been a change, where there is a Korean name and hearing other characters say that name, is very interesting for me,” said Sandra.
He added that this is rarely seen and needs to be made a regular thing that is seen on the screen.
The series “The Chair” which consists of six episodes is directed by actress Amanda Peet who is famous through films such as Saving Silverman, Changing Lanes, and Syriana.
According to Sandra Oh, Amanda Peet also tries to realistically show complex family relationships in this series.
“I’m now entering a career where I’m acting as a mother, and that’s usually a less fun role for actresses,” said Sandra Oh.
“But the mother figure that I play has a multidimensional (life story) and much that can be shown in greater depth. I am very lucky to have the opportunity to play the character (Professor Kim),” he added.
The series “”The Chair”” is now airing on the Netflix streaming service in the US. [di/lt]
