National Narcotics Agency (BNN) targeting the rules prohibiting the circulation and use of leaves kratom starting next year. The reason is that the kratom plant is said to have side effects which is stronger than morphine so it can damage health.
Actually, discussions about the kratom plant are still having pros and cons in some countries. In Thailand, the government has legalized the consumption and buying and selling of kratom.
From a study by the Thailand Development Research Institute, it was concluded that the legalization of kratom could save a budget of up to 1.69 billion baht or the equivalent of US$50 million.
Meanwhile in Malaysia, harvesting or selling kratom plants is considered an offense and is regulated in the Poison Act 1952. According to CNA, growing this plant for personal consumption is considered a gray area.
Kratom or Mitragyna speciosa K was first discovered by the botanist, Pieter Willem Korthals. Most people use the leaves for various purposes.
Here are the benefits and potential dangers of the kratom plant.
1. Overcoming fatigue
From a study published in Media Litbangkes, Ministry of Health, traditionally the kratom plant is used by farmers and laborers to overcome fatigue and increase work productivity.
To obtain these benefits, workers usually simply chew the leaves of the kratom plant 3-10 times per day. On average there are 10-30 leaves or more that are chewed every day. But there are also those who consume kratom like herbal teas or cigarettes.
2. Herbal medicine
Kratom is considered a herbal medicine. Quoted from the Postgraduate Bioscience Journal, Postgraduate School of Airlangga University, kratom is efficacious for poultices on wounds, fever medicine, relieves muscle pain, reduces appetite and treats diarrhea.
There is also a mention that kratom can increase endurance, lower high blood pressure, antidiabetic and sexual stimulant.
In Malaysia, kratom is used for the recovery of postpartum mothers.
“The antinociceptive and antidepressant effects of kratom have been reported by Cheaha et al. (2015). This antinociceptive effect is used by Malaysians for postnatal recovery by consuming it in the form of juice,” the researchers wrote.
3. Help recovery from drug addiction
Kratom is often used in the recovery process for those who are addicted to narcotics (opioids). Kratom contains more than 40 types of alkaloids with the main content in the form of mitraginine. The content of mitraginin in kratom plants has an analgesic potency 13 times higher than morphine.
At low doses, kratom provides a stimulating and euphoric effect. While at high doses it will act like opium which is able to suppress pain and is used to reduce opioid withdrawal syndrome.
